The “Associació de Familiars i Amics de Nens Oncològics de Catalunya” (Association of Families and Friends of Children Treated for Cancer of Catalonia), was founded in 1987 after the profound experience shared by a group of parents who found ourselves in the situation of having of a child in the hospital, diagnosed with cancer.
That experience revealed to us a series of shortcomings in relation to this illness and we decided to organize ourselves to search for solutions and find answers that improve the quality of life of these children and teenagers, and their families.
Over the course of these years, we have set in motion programs and services designed to improve the psychosocial health of these children and teenagers and their families.
Our area of action is Catalonia. We are headquartered in the Casa de los Xuklis, in the city of Barcelona, and we have branches in the cities of Tarragona and Lleida.
The “Associació de Familiars i Amics de Nens Oncològics de Catalunya” (AFANOC) is a non-profit, secular association, which acts from a perspective of solidarity and works with values such as social justice, social commitment, responsibility, and the management of the quality and cost-free status of the services it offers to all children and teenagers with cancer and their families.
The “Associació de Familiars i Amics de Nens Oncològics de Catalunya” (AFANOC) aims to be a reference in the integrated psychosocial care it provides to all children with cancer and their families, aspiring to raise social awareness and constantly working to achieve a quality management model that makes AFANOC stronger in organizational terms and which works toward achieving fairness between people.
AFANOC aims to work closely with families from the moment of the diagnosis, providing respectful accompaniment and encouraging a positive attitude on the part of the family. Always, the association makes an effort to adapt to new social realities. AFANOC aims to be socially transformative and innovative, to be a reference in the psychosocial care of our collective.
We accompany the family throughout the entire process of the illness, primarily taking care of whatever pyscho-emotional,
social, educational or economic needs may arise.
In these special circumstances, the affective and educational development of the children and adolescents must be appropriate, which is why our mission is to carry out any and all actions that tend to improve their quality of life, as well as to collaborate in improving the knowledge of these illnesses and their treatments.
Hospitals take care of a specific medical function, but in lengthy illnesses psychosocial health is essential. And this is the reason why an association such as AFANOC exists: the Asociación de Familiares y Amigos de Niños Oncológicos de Catalunya was founded in 1987 after the profound experience shared by a group of parents who found ourselves in the situation of having of a child in the hospital, diagnosed with cancer.
